Abstract: | Ephraim W. Cleveland served as a senior flight instructor in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War I. After the war, he continued in aviation as a pilot. In 1927, he joined the Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Company of Cleveland, Ohio, as a sales representative, later becoming vice president. He was deeply involved in the National Air Races held in Cleveland, Ohio, serving as a starter or judge. He, his wife Lucille, and his secretary Anna Belle Elmslie were killed in a plane crash in 1952. The collection consists of images of Ephraim W. "Pops" Cleveland, his wife Lucille, other family members, business associates, and aviation colleagues. Also included are views of the Cleveland residence, the Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Company, aircraft, a fishing trip, an anniversary celebration, and the crash site of Cleveland's airplane. |

Ephraim W. Cleveland was born at Naples, New York, in 1889. During World War I, he was a senior flight instructor in the United States Army Signal Corps. After the war, he, like many other wartime pilots, purchased a Curtiss JN-4 and began barnstorming the country. In 1927, he joined the Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Company, where he remained as special sales representative, and later, vice president. Cleveland was a familiar figure at the National Air Races, always functioning as a starter or judge. In 1952, Cleveland, his wife Lucille, and his secretary Anna Belle Elmslie, were killed in a plane crash on Mount Baldy near Seattle, Washington.

Also included are views of the Cleveland residence, the Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Co., aircraft, a fishing trip, an anniversary celebration, and the crash site of Cleveland's airplane. the collection includes 86 black and white photographs that measure 8 x 10 inches.
This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of aviation in the United States and Cleveland, Ohio, during the first half of the twentieth century.
