The Samuel Kleinman Family Photographs, ca. 1900-1930s, consist of one photograph album, of approximately 175 black and white photographs, documenting the life and family relations of Samuel Kleinman.
The collection is of interest to researchers studying the early twentieth century theater, Yiddish theater, and Jewish genealogy. The most interesting pictures are group photographs taken of actors and actresses working in theaters in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. The photographs depict life in show business in Cleveland in the early twentieth century. Remarkable photographs include shots of a Jewish ensemble in a large 1920s automobile in front of a theater with Yiddish-language advertising and the full cast of what appears to be a production of The Merchant of Venice in full costume, on and off stage. The collection also offers images of actors and other theater employees, some in costume and on stage.
