<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>History of the Schiller-Goethe Monument in Cleveland, Ohio</head><p></p><bioghist><p>The original Schiller-Goethe Monument is located in Weimar, Germany. The bronze monument depicts German authors Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832) and was designed by Ernst Rietschel in 1857. There are four exact copies of the monument in the United States, including the monument dedicated in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1907. The Schiller-Goethe Monument Association coordinated the fundraising and details for the Cleveland monument, and 65,000 people attended the dedication of the monument in Wade Park. While the original monument was cast in Munich, the Cleveland monument was cast in Lauchammer, Germany. The monument was moved to the German Cultural Garden in Cleveland's Rockefeller Park and rededicated in 1929.</p></bioghist></bioghist><scopecontent encodinganalog="520$a"><head>Scope and Content</head><p>The Schiller-Goethe Monument Association of Cleveland, Ohio, Records, 1904-1937, consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, programs, pamphlets, and other records.
