Anton L. maresh was a Cleveland, Ohio, musician, piano store owner, Republican politician, and collector of Abraham Lincoln material, who was also known as Anthony L. Maresh. His piano store on East 55th Street became the Republican political headquarters for Cleveland's southeast side, and in 1913, Maresh and his associates helped launch the political candidacy of Harry L. Davis for mayor. Maresh retired from the piano business in 1937, but actively pursued his hobby of collecting Lincoln memorabilia, building one of the largest private collections of Lincoln documents and lecturing on Lincoln lore to various groups. He served as long-time president of the local branch of the Lincoln Association of Ohio. The collection consists of personal correspondence, files on Cleveland politics and the music business, clippings, and financial and legal documents. Included is a collection of Lincoln material, consisting of copies of documents and facsimiles, addresses and writings about Lincoln by Maresh, writings on Lincoln by other authors, magazine articles and clippings. The collection pertains primarily to Maresh's interest in Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, as well as Maresh's activities in the local Lincoln Association. Additional materials pertain to Maresh's music business and political activities.

<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Biography of Anton L. Maresh</head><p></p><bioghist><p>Anton L. Maresh (b. 1877) was a Cleveland, Ohio, community leader and musician as well as a collector of Lincolnia. Founder of the Maresh Piano Company in 1896, Maresh composed his own music, spending much of his early life travelling around the country promoting his music and his business. He headquartered his operations first in his home in the Boradway-East 55th Street neighborhood which was dominated by German and Bohemian-born residents who worked primarily at the Cleveland Worsted Mills. He later moved to a permanent location at 3303 East 55th Street. The piano store quickly became Republican political headquarters for Cleveland's southeast side and, from that location in 1913, Maresh and fellow Republicans launched the career of Harry L. Davis who later became mayor of Cleveland. Maresh retired from the music business in 1937 but continued to actively pursue his hobby of collecting Abraham Lincoln memorabilia. This hobby dated from maresh's visit to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair where he admired exhibits devoted to Lincolnia. In the 1960s, his private collection ranked among the ten largest of Lincoln documents. Active in the Lincoln Memorial Association of Ohio and long-time president of the local Cleveland branch, Maresh gave over 500 talks on Lincoln lore to various groups.</p></bioghist></bioghist><scopecontent encodinganalog="520$a"><head>Scope and Content</head><p>The Anton L.
