| | | | Creator: | Garretson, George Armstrong Family | | | | Dates: | 1898-1919 | | | | Abstract: | George Armstron Garretson (1844-1916) was a General who commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Army Corps, and later the 1st Brigade, Provisional Division, during the Spanish American War. He was also president of the National Bank of Commerce in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of four albums and 18 loose photographs. Album 1 is entitled 135th Field Artillery American Expeditionary Forces. Photographs document the unit's training at Camp Sheridan, its service in France, and its return to the United States in 1917-1919. The album also includes some clippings, correspondence, and cloth insignias. Album 2 contains photographs showing military scenes at Camp Alger, VA. during June 1898. The scenes include many views of George Garretson and his regiment. Album 3 contains views relating to military life and activities on board the U.S.S. Yale and in Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War. Album 4 contains photographs of Troop A, Cleveland, Ohio, en route to and on duty at the Mexican border in 1917, along with newspaper clippings and pamphlet material concerning Troop A. Herrick (1854-1929) was a humanitarian, financier, industrialist, Governor of Ohio, and United States Ambassador to France. Herrick served as president and chairman of the board of the Society for Savings, Cleveland, Ohio. He also had numerous other local and national business interests. Herrick was involved in Ohio and national Republican party politics, maintaining close ties with Marcus A. Hanna, William McKinley, and other party notables. He won election as Ohio governor in 1903, serving one term. He was appointed United States Ambassador to France in 1912, serving until November 1914. Herrick played a key role in wartime France, both in his participation in diplomatic relations between combatants and in various humanitarian aid pursuits. Herrick was reappointed Ambassador to France by President Harding in 1921, serving until his death in 1929. The collection consists of one photograph album made up by Mr. R. A. C. He opened a studio in 1859, and moved his business to Euclid Avenue in 1883. Decker photographed many of the business, political, and society elite of Cleveland over a 40 year period. He also photographed presidents of the United States, statesmen, soldiers, and other famous persons of the time. Decker was elected president of the National Photographic Association in 1887, and was also involved in Cleveland politics, serving on City Council from 1878-1882. His business was taken over by his protege, George Edmondson. The collection consists of one album containing photographs taken by Edgar Decker. The album came into the hands of George Edmundson when he purchased Decker's business. Photographs are primarily of Cleveland, Ohio's, business, political, and society elite. During the height of its growth the settlement offered a full range of social, educational and recreational activities, but since 1948 it has concentrated its resources on Hiram House Camp in the suburb of Chagrin Falls. Before 1948 its primary service area was centered in a neighborhood populated primarily by Jews, Italians and African Americans. The collection consists of approximately 4,000 black and white photographs and prints taken mainly by George A. Bellamy and his assistants. The collection includes scenes of the settlement house in Cleveland, Ohio, neighborhoods, activities both at the settlement house and at Hiram House Camp, and portraits of many of the staff members, supporters, and participants. It was originally named the University Neighborhood Centers and was operated by the School of Applied Social Sciences of Western Reserve University as a training program for graduate students while providing a full range of community services and activities. In 1936 it changed its affiliation to the Welfare Federation of Cleveland and its name to the University Settlement. The collection consists of unmounted photographs and negatives relating to activities sponsored by and facilities of University Settlement, Cleveland, Ohio. Included are views of parades, dances, plays, playgrounds, teen canteens, senior activities, games, nursery school, clubs, and general interior views of the Settlement. Also included are views of the groundbreaking for the Fleet Avenue building, Ottawa Lodge Camp, and various trips. Group and individual portraits include those of neighborhood residents, Eleanor Grimes, and several group portraits which include Mayor Ralph J. Perk.
