3101Title:  League of Women Voters of Cleveland Photographs

 Abstract:  The League of Women Voters was formed in 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio, by former suffragists and members of the Woman's Suffrage Party. The League is nonpartisan and has endorsed various legislation, including laws to protect female workers and improve child welfare and education. Its efforts include voter registration drives, assistance to election boards, demonstrations of registration and voting techniques, as well as sponsoring candidates debates. The collection consists of photographs of members and activities engaged in or sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Cleveland. Included in the photographs is a group portrait in front of the Woman Suffrage Headquarters, ca. 1912, that includes Belle Sherwin and Florence Allen. Other photographs are of the October 3, 1914, Ohio Women's Suffrage Parade in Cleveland, Ohio. Pictured are Mrs. George F. Forest, the Men's League for Equal Suffrage, the Progressive Party float, and the Ohio County Committees for Women's Suffrage. Photographs of League displays and buildings include views of the National League of Women Voters building, a straw vote display, and various voter registration displays. Group portraits, taken at League activities, include Carl Stokes, Mary Jayne Willis, Anthony Celebrezze, Robert Montgomery, Mrs. John C. Also included are group photographs, including two of weddings. Views, many of which are labeled in German, show scenes of Lakewood, Ohio, and Chicago, Illinois, beer hall interiors, beach and backyard picnic scenes, yachts, general lake scenes, a German convention, household scenes, boating parties, children playing, Christmas celebrations, and the Bedford Reservation of Cleveland Metroparks.

 Abstract:  The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1911 for the advancement of the commercial, industrial, and civic interests of the city of Lakewood, Ohio. Collection consists of minutes, annual reports, financial records, budget reports, membership lists, news releases and other documents of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, and records of the Lakewood Community Center, the Lakewood Merchants Council, the Lakewood Junior Chamber of Commerce, and several neighborhood business associations. The collection consists of mounted and unmounted photographs mainly of various groups in the Lakewood, Ohio area. Included are group photographs of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce board of directors and annual meetings; the Lakewood American Legion mounted unit; Slovak groups, including the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union; various military groups; blue star mothers; boy and girl scouts; recipients of fire prevention award plaques; theatrical, musical, and school groups; a wedding; an antique car show; Christmas scenes; the Hi Toppers; ice skating parties; a Lakewood group at the White House (including Herbert Hoover); various safety patrol units; and camping on the Rocky River near Mastick Road.

3105Title:  Jeptha Homer Wade Family Photographs

 Abstract:  The Jeptha Home Wade family was a prominent nineteenth and early twentieth century Cleveland, Ohio, family with business interests in the telegraph and railroad industries, mining, manufacturing, and banking. Jeptha Homer Wade spent his early life as an apprentice to a tanner and as a carpenter. He next turned his interest to the emerging telegraph industry. In 1849, he organized the Cleveland and Cincinnati Telegraph Company. In 1857, Wade moved to Cleveland as the Western Union Telegraph Company's first general agent. His business interests were extensive in Cleveland, including the Cleveland Rolling Mill Company and the Citizens Savings and Loan Association. Randall Palmer Wade worked with his father in the telegraph business, moving with him to Cleveland in 1857. His business interests included the Cuyahoga Mining Company; the Citizens Savings and Loan Association; the Cleveland Banking Company; the American Sheet and Boiler Plate Company, and the Chicago and Atchison Bridge Company. Jeptha Homer Wade II also worked in the telegraph industry; he later joined the banking community in Cleveland. He was an active philanthropist, serving as a trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Western Reserve University, Adelbert College, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was an incorporator of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1913, and later established a purchasing fund for the Museum. The collection consists of one carte de visite album, with blue velvet binding, and six folders of loose photographs and plates relating to the Wade family of Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to Wade family members, individuals of the Garretson, Howe, and Stone families are also portrayed, along with friends of the Wade family. Included are two engraving plates of Jeptha Homer Wade Jr.

 Abstract:  The East End Neighborhood House was Founded in 1907, by Hedwig Kosbob, as a sewing school in a predominantly Hungarian and Slovak neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. It was incorporated in 1910. By 1914 it began cultural and recreational programs, and by the Depression it grew into a full service community center, adding such services as day care nurseries, Americanization classes, and aid to Japanese Americans relocated to Cleveland during World War II. The collection consists of unmounted photographs of activities at and facilities of East End Neighborhood House, Cleveland, Ohio. Included are views of facilities, window displays, children, classes, groups at the Woodland Hills Housing Project, parties, polio inoculations, senior groups, sports, carnivals, nursery school scenes, and Camp Mather. Includes negatives, ca. 1950-1960, of groups and activities.

 Abstract:  John Devereux was a sea captain of Marblehead, Massachusetts. John H. Devereux was a Civil War officer, engineer, railroad executive, and philanthropist, of Cleveland, Ohio. Henry K. Devereux was an engineer, real estate agent, industrialist, philanthropist, and harness-horse fancier, of Cleveland. The collection consists of five albums, unmounted photographs, and stereographs relating to the life and interests of various Devereux family members of Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to many individual portraits of Devereux family members and friends, the collection includes group portraits of the Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery; various coaching groups; gatherings at North Randall and Wickliffe, Ohio; and horses, drivers, and harness racing. Included are stereographs (ca. 1890-1910) of the Devereux farm in the South, the Medina County, Ohio, fair (1910), and the North Randall, Ohio race track.

 Abstract:  Adella Prentiss Hughes (1869-1950) was a musical impresario and founder and manager of the Cleveland Orchestra. Her grandparents, Benjamin and Rebecca Rouse, were leaders in various charitable and religious institutions in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of one album containing clippings, some manuscript items, and primarily photographs, relating to the family of Adella Prentiss Hughes of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are portraits of Benjamin and Rebecca Cromwell Rouse, grandparents of Adella Prentiss Hughes; E. C. Rouse; Margaret Miller; Mary Miller Rouse; and H. C. Rouse. Also included are views of the birthplace of Henry Clark Rouse at 489 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio; the Miller Block at 193-195 Superior Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio; and the United Brass Company Works, Lorain, Ohio.  Abstract:  George Magoffin Humphrey was the President of the M.A. Hanna Company, and United States Secretary of the Treasury (1953-1957). The collection consists of two albums, loose photographs, a notebook, and a booklet containing photographs related to the career of George M. Humphrey of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are portraits of Humphrey as a child, with President Dwight Eisenhower and various members of the Eisenhower administration, and with his wife, Pamela Stark Humphrey. Group photographs contain views of Eisenhower's second inauguration that include Vice President Richard M. Nixon; business associates of Humphrey; various ceremonies, receptions, and dinners attended by Humphrey and his wife; photographs of Humphrey receiving various honorary academic degrees at a number of institutions; Humphrey with Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain; and travel photographs, including several trips with President Eisenhower and other cabinet members. A booklet contains photographs and maps relating to the operation of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Other loose photographs contain views of work on a railroad to the Scheffeville Mines Iron Ore Company, a ceremony marking the completion of that railroad line, and ceremonies marking the first passage of an iron ore cargo from Canada to Cleveland, Ohio through the St. Lawrence Seaway.

 Abstract:  Frank Augustus Scott (1873-1949) was a Cleveland, Ohio businessman and civic leader who was chairman of the Munitions Standards Board of the Council of National Defense and first chairman of the War Industries Board during World War I, as well as chairman of the board of Warner & Swasey Company. The collection consists of photographs depicting Scott, his friends and associates, and his travels connected to his studies of United States military preparedness. Included are views taken at Port Arthur, Russia, displaying damage inflicted on the city's fortifications during the 1905 Russo-Japanese War.

Taft's senatorial and presidential campaigns. He was also active in Cleveland civic and social welfare organizations. The collection consists of unmounted photographs relating to Paul W. Walter's work as campaign manager for U.S. Senator Robert A. Taft. Includes individual portraits of Robert A. Taft campaign staff members and group portraits with either Robert Taft or Paul Walter posed with campaign workers or officials. Includes photographs relating to the Taft presidential campaigns of 1948 and 1952.

 Abstract:  Ray Thomas Miller (1893-1966) was a prominent lawyer, businessman and Democratic political leader in Cleveland, Ohio, who served as assistant law director (1922-1923), city prosecutor (1928), and Mayor (1932-1935). A major accomplishment of his administration was the relief of the city's homeless and unemployed through the acquisition of federal WPA funds and the establishment of such programs as the Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority, the Wayfarer's Lodge, and municipal kitchens. The collection consists of photograph albums, a scrapbook, photographs, and negatives relating to the family, life, and career of Ray T. Miller, of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are four albums entitled Official Photographs of the 37th Division A.E.F., published by the E.R. Kissenger Co., Columbus, Ohio. Photographs in the albums depict World War I scenes ca. 1917-1918. Another album contains snapshots of a Miller family trip (ca. 1900) to California and the Southwest, and include family group portraits, raliroad scenes, photographs of western Native Americans, and views of the Grand Canyon. Loose photographs include portraits of Ray T. Miller and Miller family members; individual and group photographs at Defiance High School, Defiance, Ohio; photographs depicting the University of Notre Dame, including Notre Dame football teams, individual portraits of Knute Rockne, and individual football players; and photographs of Ray T. Miller and other members of the 37th Division A.E.F. during World War I. The bulk of photographs depict the political career of Ray T. Miller, and include scenes of Democratic National Conventions (1940, 1944, and 1960); political campaigns, including the Miller gubernatorial campaign of 1948 and various presidential campaign functions for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Adlai Stevenson, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson; and local Cleveland and Ohio Democratic Party political functions and personalities, including the Cuyahoga County Democratic Steer Roast at Euclid Beach Park, Jack P. Russell, Stephen M. Young, and Anthony Celebrezze, and views of Judge Manuel Levine swearing Ray T. Miller in as mayor of Cleveland.

 Abstract:  Paul Bellamy (1884-1956) was an author, journalist, and editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (1933-1954). He also served as president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and director of the Plain Dealer and Forest City Publishing Companies. The collection consists of photographs documenting the life, family, and career of Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper editor Paul Bellamy. Included are photographs of Paul Bellamy's birthplace, Paul Bellamy and the staff of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, ca. 1908-1911, and group photographs (ca. 1940-1955) picturing Bellamy and various other individuals, including Emma Augusta Sanderson Bellamy, Mrs. Paul Bellamy, Nat Howard, Louis Seltzer, Anthony Celebrezze, Robert P. Patterson, Herman L. Vail, Robert Bulkley, Gardner Cowles, Jr., Frank Hubbell, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Peter Lawford, Irving Berlin, Carl Friebolin, Thomas A. Burke, Thomas Herbert, I.F. Freiberger, Warren Craves, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Also included is an album (ca. 1946) relating to the inaugural round-the-world flight by Pan American Airways on which Bellamy was a passenger.

 Abstract:  The Historic American Buildings Survey was a national survey to record and catalog historic buildings. It began in 1934 as a federal make-work project to provide work for unemployed architects, draftsmen and photographers. It was initially funded and supervised by the Civil Works Administration and later supervised by the National Park Service, the American Institute of Architecture and the Library of Congress, with a combination of private and Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds. William A. Bohnard was the first Northern Ohio District Officer. The collection consists of photographs of historic buildings in northern Ohio taken under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration during the late 1930s. In most cases, the photographs are mounted in small pamphlets giving historical and structural information concerning the building. Historic buildings in the following northern Ohio communities are included: Akron, Ashland, Atwater, Aurora, Avon, Bath, Bentleyville, Brecksville, Bristolville, Burton, Chagrin Falls, Claridon, Cleveland, Colebrook, Copley, Deerfield, Dover, Findley, Fremont, Gates Mills, Hudson, Huntington, Ira, Jefferson, Kinsman, Kirtland, Lakewood, Limaville, McCuthonville, Mentor, Milan, Monroeville, Mt. Vernon, Newton Falls, North Bloomfield, North Bristol, North Lewisberg, North Olmstead, Northfield, Norwalk, Painesville, Parma, Parma Heights, Peninsula, Seville, Solon, Streetsboro, Tallmadge, Twinsburg, Unionville, Vermillion, Warren, Wellington, Waterville, Weymouth, Whitesburgh, Wooster, and Zoar.  Abstract:  Charles W. White (1897-1970) was a Cleveland, Ohio, African American attorney who became Assistant Law Director for Cleveland (1933-1955) and Common Pleas Court judge (1955-1970). He was active in African American rights organizations and civic affairs. The collection consists of photographs and negatives relating to the family, life, and career of Judge Charles W. White of Cleveland, Ohio. Family photographs include individual and group portraits of Judge White, wife Stella White, brothers Robert and Allen White, and daughter Lillian White, among others. Included with Judge White in political and non-family group portraits are Ralph Locher, Clayborne George, William O. Walker, Benjamin O.  Abstract:  Katherine P. Williamson (1910-1964) was a Cleveland, Ohio, social worker who had a particular interest in improved housing for minority groups. She was a caseworker for the Cuyahoga County Child Welfare Dept., Family Life Coordinator for the Welfare Federation of Cleveland's Central Area Community Council, and Child Welfare Consultant, and later, Northeast Area Superior, for the Ohio Dept. of Public Welfare. The collection consists of photographs relating mainly to Katherine P. Williamson's work at Friendly Inn Social Settlement, Cleveland, Ohio. Includes photographs of various groups of African Americans at Friendly Inn Social Settlement, including senior citizens and arts and crafts groups. Also includes photographs relating to a Family Life and Health Month parade and fair held in Cleveland in 1957, sponsored by the Friendly Inn. Those pictured in the parade and fair photographs are: Anthony Celebrezze, Perry B. Jackson, William O. Walker, Russell Davis, Ethel Storey, Charles W. White, and George Theobald.
