 Abstract:  Hope-Wesley United Methodist Church was formed in 1973, in Cleveland, Ohio, by the merger of Hope United Methodist and Wesley Methodist churches. Hope United was formed in 1967 by the merger of Emanuel Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1865) and First Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1854), two early German churches. Wesley Methodist was formed in 1947 by the merger of St. Paul's (est. 1853) and Franklin Ave. (est. 1833) Methodist Episcopal churches. The collection consists of photographs, one tintype, and two glass slides of the buildings and members of the German Evangelical United Brethren churches of Cleveland, Ohio, which eventually joined to form the Hope-Wesley United Methodist Church, the Emanuel Evangelical Church, and St. Paul's Methodist Church.

3146Title:  Buell Family Photographs

 Abstract:  The Buell family was a pioneer family from Connecticut who helped settle Marietta, Ohio. Joseph Buell was a sergeant at Fort Harmar, across the Muskingum River from Marietta, when the first settling party from the Ohio Company arrived in April 1788. He later settled in Marietta with his family. Joseph Buell ran a successful tavern. In addition, he was appointed an associate justice of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas and a major general in the Ohio Militia in 1803, and served an an elected state senator from 1803-1805. Joseph's brother Timothy Buell was a captain in the militia and also served as a county magistrate, a state representative from 1820-1822, and sheriff of Washington County. Many of their descendants were also prominent in the affairs of Marietta and Washington County. The collection consists of portraits of members of the Buell, Curtis, and Nye families. Also includes photographs of Troop A of Cleveland, Ohio, miscellaneous interiors, views of Blennerhassett Island, postcards, and lithographic prints depicting various scenes, buildings, and people of the United States, Canada, and Europe.

 Abstract:  The Townsend National Recovery Plan, Inc., formerly known as the Old Age Revolving Pension Plan, was established by Dr. Francis E. Townsend of California in 1934. It had several clubs in northeast Ohio. The collection consists of photographs and panorama photographs of groups of members of the Townsend Club at various cities and halls for their conventions. Panorama photographs consist mainly of group portraits of various meetings, banquets, conventions, and reunions.

 Abstract:  Earle Levan Johnson (1895-1947) was an Ohio state representative who became national commander of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. The collection consists of photographs and albums relating to the career and family and friends of Colonel Earle Johnson. Included are numerous photographs reflecting Johnson's career with the Civil Air Patrol. Also included are scenes depicting cadet training at Smyrna Army Airfield, Tennessee, during World War II.

 Abstract:  George Washington Crile (1864-1943) was an internationally-known surgeon and co-founder of the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio. He was also a respected medical scientist whose research and writings included surgical shock, glandular function, blood pressure and transfusion, shell shock, and the effects of wartime surgery. He served in the Army Medical Corps during the Spanish American War. During World War I, he was surgical director at the American Ambulance Hospital in Neuilly, France. In 1917, he organized and trained medical personnel from Lakeside Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, who then served at United States Army Base Hospital No. 4 in Rouen, France. In 1921, he co-founded the Cleveland Clinic, serving as president (1921-1940) and as a trustee (1921-1936). In 1913, Crile helped found the American College of Surgeons, and was a member and officer not only of that organization, but also of the American Medical Association, American Surgical Association, Royal Academy of Surgeons, and the Royal Academy of Medicine. The collection consists of mounted photographs of layout pages for the Album de Las Guerre, depicting Army Base Hospital No. 4 in France during World War I. Includes a folder of original negative sleeves with notes for this picture group and for PG 15 George W. Crile Family Photographs.

 Abstract:  Alexander Bunts was a Cleveland, Ohio, neurosurgeon, amateur historian, and Trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society. He traced his descent from Virgil C. Taylor, an American Civil War soldier and Cleveland realtor, and from Levi Johnson, an early settler of Cleveland. The collection consists of photographs and albums of activities, friends, and members of the Bunts family of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are various scenic and vacation views, home interiors, group portraits, and individual portraits. Other families whose photographs are contained in the collection include the Shafer, Barnhisel-Harmon, Johnson, Sacket, Rumbaugh, and Taylor families. 3155Title:  A. Donald Gray Landscape Photographs

 Abstract:  A. Donald Gray (1891-1939) was a landscape architect and designer in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1920-1939. Gray worked briefly with Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., in Brookline, Massachusetts, before establishing a landscape architecture practice in Cleveland. He designed many private gardens and estates for some of the most elite families of Cleveland and its outlying suburbs, including the noted private development of Fairhill Rd. houses in 1931. Gray was also the landscape designer for several public projects, including the Cedar-Central apartments, the first federal public-housing project in the nation, and many of Cleveland's public parks. Perhaps his most notable achievement was the creation of the WPA-funded Horticultural Gardens for the Great Lakes Exposition, 1936-1937, some of which remain on the site north of Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. The gardens were named for Gray as a memorial after his death. Gray took several trips to England, South America, Mexico and elsewhere throughout his career to study the landscaping of great houses and public places. He also contributed a regular gardening column to the Cleveland Press during the mid-1930s. The collection consists of photographs and one album of several estates in the Cleveland and Ohio area, including homes of L.C. Hanna, Robert Lazarus, Tl.L. Sidlo, and R. W. White. Photographers include Margaret Bourke-White. Also included is an album of photographs taken during A. Donald Gray's visit to England in 1925, including an alphabetical location index.

 Abstract:  Harold H. Burton (1888-1964) was a lawyer, World War I soldier, law professor, Ohio state congressman, law director of Cleveland, Acting City Manager, Acting Mayor, Mayor, United States Senator from Ohio, and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The collection consists of photographs depicting Burton's term as mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, including Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects and the Great Lakes Exposition. Also included are views of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens; individual and group portraits including Harold H. Burton; city vehicles, including police, fire, and sanitation equipment; Kirtland Park pier; city facilities, including pumping stations, fire houses, and incinerators; local statues; and scenes depicting the political campaigns of Harold H. Burton. Group photographs include Safety Director Eliot Ness, Cleveland Orchestra conductor Artur Rodzinski, and other prominent Clevelanders of the 1930s. Other views depict the construction of many of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens and of the Shoreway.

 Abstract:  William Anderson Haven (1888-1973) was a chemical engineer who worked at U.S. Steel, New York Steel, Carnegie Steel, Marting Iron Company and Republic Steel. After management differences with Cyrus Eaton at Republic in 1929 he left to become vice-president of Arthur G. McKee and Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Before his retirement in 1953 he had planned or supervised the construction of numerous steel plants and oil refineries in the U.S. and throughout the world. The collection consists of photographs of steel making operations in China and the U.S.S.R. which were supervised by William A. Haven. Included are scenic and family photographs taken while Haven and his family were in Shanghai, China; photographs of iron ore properties, coal mines, and transportation routes for the Kwangfung Iron and Steel works, Canton China; and views of other plants, landscapes, mines, and iron ore deposits within China.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Section of the National Council of Jewish Women is a women's service organization founded in 1894, in Cleveland, Ohio, as a local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. Its services to Cleveland's Jewish and general communities include hot meals delivered to the elderly, homes for the elderly and working girls, scholarships, day nurseries and thrift shops. The collection consists of photographs, negatives, slides, and an album, relating to the members and activities of the National Council of Jewish Women, Cleveland Section, of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are photographs of the Council-sponsored Thrift Shop, a toy project, individual and group portraits of members at various functions, photographs of guest speakers, and photographs of the Martha House.
