Linsey's livelihood included painting, teaching art and photography, and producing architectural drawings and personal portraits. The collection consists of approximately 1000 negatives of various historic structures in Cleveland and the Western Reserve, including views of bridges, buildings, churches and synagogues, industry, monuments, and residences. In 1926 the name was changed to the Cleveland Cultural Garden League, and in 1952 to the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation. Weidenthal conceived the idea of a series of gardens, each having a central theme concerning the history of a single nationality group in Cleveland, Ohio. The City of Cleveland and the Work Projects Administration did much of the work on the earlier gardens after a 1927 ordinance set aside areas of Rockefeller Park next to the Shakespeare Garden for the development of similar gardens with ethnic themes. The collection consists of photographs and drawings relating to Cleveland, Ohio's Cultural Gardens, including dedications of the Gardens, sculpture within them, and individuals associated with the Gardens. In 1895 the Association joined the American Federation of Musicians and became A.F.M. Local 4. Black members left to form their own local, No. 550, in 1910, but reunited with Local 4, also known as the Cleveland Federation of Musicians, in 1962. Establishment of minimum wages and protection of its members were the union's main goals. Women musicians were given equal protection after being admitted to the union in 1901. Other union activities included support of other unions, publication of the Cleveland Musician, and sponsorship of the Druid Club. | | | | Creator: | Snajdr, Vaclav | | | | Dates: | 1869-1955 | | | | Abstract: | Vaclav Snajdr (1847-1920) was a Czech writer and journalist who moved to Racine, Wisconsin in 1869 to edit the newspaper Slavie. He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he began his own paper, Pokrok, in 1873. When it failed in 1876 Snajdr remained in Cleveland and started a weekly, rationalist newspaper, Dennice Novoveku, in 1877. Later he also published a Sunday paper, Jednota. From 1883 to 1886 Snajdr published Osvobozenych, and from 1891 to 1896 he published Organ Bratsoi of the Cesko-Slovanska Podporyici Spolecnost. Snajdr sold his newspaper and publishing business to Svet Publishing Company in 1910 but remained active in local politics and business. He retired in 1919 and moved to California. About 1887 they moved to a farm near Tustin, Michigan, where Emmet was also engaged in the lumbering business. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of individual and group portraits, including Charles Hubbell, Samuel L. Mather, Thomas E. Dewey, Henry Ford, Edsel Ford, Henry Ford II, Frederick C. In addition to various businesses, he owned the Peoples and Perry theaters in Cleveland, which presented entertainment in Yiddish in the Eastern European Jewish neighborhood of Woodland. He became involved in Cleveland politics as a ward boss in the 16th (later the 12th) ward of Cleveland, a heavily immigrant neighborhood. He married Sarah Trilling in 1888. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and Suburban Community Hospitals who was also active in the Cleveland Jewish community. Dr. Miller was certified to practice orthopedic surgery and trained as a flight surgeon in 1938. He served in the army medical corps from 1941 to 1946. In 1960 Dr. Miller and his wife, Ellen, became involved in fund raising for the hospital ship Hope. Dr. Miller sailed with the ship to many countries, including Ecuador and Vietnam, where he practiced medicine and trained native physicians. the collection consists of portraits and views pertaining to the life and career of Dr. Alexander Miller of Cleveland, Ohio.
