	Abstract:	Robert Huddle Jamison (1884-1965) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer who was active in many area organizations, including the Regional Planning Commission, Cleveland Public Library Board, Welfare Fund, Cleveland Board of Education, Cleveland Bar Association, YMCA, and Cleveland Chamber of Commerce. His wife, Marjorie Jamison, was active in the Book and Thimble Club and helped to organize a special committee of the Cleveland USO during World War II to provide traveller's aid to servicemen. The collection consists of individual portraits of Robert Jamison; and group portraits, primarily of Troop A of Cleveland, Ohio, at Camp Willis and El Paso, Texas (1916-1917). Also included is a group portrait of the Lawyers Club of Troop A, views of the William F. Carr residence and the Cleveland Board of Education, and the American Legion (1922).

	Abstract:	The Leisy Brewing Company was a Cleveland, Ohio, based brewery which began as Isaac Leisy & Co. in 1873. Once Cleveland's largest independent brewery, it had branch agencies in Ohio, western Pa., and Indiana, and gained a reputation for its Premium Lager and Budweiser beers, before that became a brand name. Production in 1890 was over 90,000 barrels, and rose to 355,000 barrels by 1917. When the company closed in 1959, it was the oldest brewery in Cleveland and one of the longest surviving family-operated breweries in America. The collection consists of individual portraits of Otto Leisy and his family; unidentified individual and group portraits of Leisy Brewing Company staff; Leisy staff party portraits; views of the Leisy family residence; and exterior and interior views of the Leisy plant complex at various stages. The majority of photographs depict various aspects of Leisy advertising and include views of billboards, taxi posters, displays, horse-drawn and motorized delivery vehicles, and the Leisy company mascot. A bound album contains reproductions of product labels and advertising.

	Abstract:	The Cleveland Bar Association is an organization (f. 1873) of Cleveland, Ohio, lawyers whose purpose is to maintain the honor and dignity of the law profession and promote legal and judicial reform. Operating via a series of committees, the association over the years has investigated misconduct by lawyers, judges, sheriffs, and police, which has resulted in resignations and/or disbarment. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of members. Also includes the following subjects: Court Management Study Committee; Law in Urban Affairs, East High School; Call for Action (1975); Justice Center, Mayor's Court (1972); Securities Law Institute (1972); Trial Advocacy Institute (1972); Your Day in Court Project (1977); and the Law Office Economics Committee (1973-1975).

3424	Title:	Cleveland Municipal Light Plant Construction Photographs

	Abstract:	The municipal electrical system of Cleveland, Ohio, had its beginnings when the city annexed the suburb of South Brooklyn and took over its light plant in 1906. Cleveland added another light plant when it annexed Collinwood in 1910. The East 53rd Street plant began operations in July 1914, rendering the Brooklyn plant unnecessary. In 1917, construction began on the addition to the East 53rd Street plant. A year later the Collinwood plant was abandoned. In 1938, the Lake Road Generating Station was built on North Marginal Drive. The collection consists of views of various municipal light plants of the publicly owned electrical power system of Cleveland, Ohio. Views include the construction of the East 53rd Street Municipal Light Plant addition; views of the Collinwood, Brooklyn and Lake Road plants; and supplementary views of support infrastructure. Also included are individual portraits of employees.

	Abstract:	Lana Moresky (b. 1946) is a Women's rights activist from Cleveland, Ohio, and officer of the National Organization for Women (NOW). In 1972, Moresky joined the Cleveland, Ohio NOW. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate, and, in 1974, Moresky became state NOW coordinator. In 1976 she was elected to a seat on the NOW national board. Moresky remained involved in NOW, particularly at the local level, throughout the 1980s, even as her political and women's rights activities increased and diversified. Her involvement included: Ohio Attorney General's Task Force on Sexism in Education, Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, Twenty-Second District Caucus chairperson, Democratic National Convention delegate, and Cleveland board member of Americans for Democratic Action. The collection consists of photographs from the 1980 presidential election campaign, including individual and group portraits of Lana Moresky, Walter Mondale, Geraldine Ferraro, Ted Kennedy, Joan Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy, Eleanor Smeal, and Howard Metzenbaum. Also included are views of Kennedy delegates from the 22nd Congressional district, a Kennedy rally at the Old Arcade, and the 1980 Reagan inauguration.

	Abstract:	Fannie M. Lewis (1926-2008) was an African American activist and Cleveland, Ohio, councilwoman. She was involved in a number of Hough neighborhood improvement programs, including Community Action for Youth, Neighborhood Youth Corps, Model Cities Association, and the Citizen's Participation Organization. She became a city councilwoman from Cleveland's Ward 7 in 1982. The collection consists of photographs depicting Lewis' involvement in the Hough community of Cleveland, Ohio, and Cleveland politics. It includes images of Fannie Lewis, Carl and Louis Stokes, Ralph Perk, and Booker Tall.

	Abstract:	Peter Henry Kaiser (1840-1929) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer who grew up in the Dutch Valley area of Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was an amateur historian and wrote numerous short stories about his childhood home in Tuscarawas County. His second wife, Beza (Boynton) Kaiser, also wrote stories about the early history of Tuscarawas County. Their children were Ella Kaiser Carruth and John Boynton Kaiser. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Kaiser and others, including the first grade class at Outhwaite School (1887), Kaiser in his law office in Cleveland, Ohio (ca. 1900), and the dedication of a monument (1927).

	Abstract:	Carl Stokes (1927-1996) was the mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, from 1967-1971. Stokes was the first African American mayor of a major American city and the first African American Democrat in the Ohio State Legislature, where he served three terms from 1962-67. As mayor, Stokes launched a number of programs to alleviate the problems of urban decay. Chief among these was Cleveland: NOW!, a joint public and private program with plans to raise $177 million in its first two years to revitalize Cleveland. The program was discredited due to the Glenville Shootout in July, 1968. Under Stokes, Cleveland City Council passed the Equal Employment Opportunity Ordinance, and HUD resumed funding projects aiding in the construction of over 3,000 new low- and middle-income housing units. Stokes became a newscaster with NBC television in 1972, and returned to his law practice in Cleveland in 1980. In 1983, Stokes was elected a municipal court judge. The collection consists of formal individual portraits of Carl Stokes, individual and group portraits of the Stokes family and friends, city officials, local and national celebrities and political figures, and individual citizens. It also includes candid and formal group portraits and views of official functions of the mayor, functions of individual city departments and commissions, and local community groups. Included are portraits of Hubert H. Humphrey, Edmund Muskie, Rev. Billy Graham, Pope Paul VI, entertainers Bob Hope and Bill Cosby, and Congressmen Charles Vanik and Louis Stokes. Events depicted include Cleveland NOW! activities, urban renewal and housing rehabilitation, the Glenville shootout, and youth activities.

	Abstract:	Jack Russell (1915-1979) was a Cleveland, Ohio, councilman, 1943-1971, council president, 1955-1963, and Democratic majority leader who was born Paul Ruschak, but changed his name in the 1930s. Russell was raised in the Hungarian-American community of Cleveland's Buckeye Road neighborhood and published newspapers in that area, including the Buckeye Press. He was councilman from the 16th ward from 1943 to 1971 and operated several businesses, including the Ohio Fire Protection Systems. Russell began the Night in Budapest celebration in 1957, which commemorated the Hungarian Freedom Fighters of 1956 and highlighted Hungarian culture and Hungarian-Americans. The collection consists of photographs, slides, negatives, and films pertaining to the political career of Jack P. Russell. Included are photographs of Cleveland City Council, both individual portraits and views and including the City Council softball team, ca. 1940s-1960s; local Cleveland politicians, including Thomas A. Burke, Anthony Celebrezze, Ray T. Miller, and Carl Stokes, often pictured with Russell; national political figures, usually taken during campaign events in Cleveland, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, Adlai Stevenson, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson; Cleveland Ward 16 political events; Democratic Party events, including rallies, picnics, dinners, and campaign photographs; city of Cleveland events, including park and playground dedications and ribbon cuttings, including several of the Port of Cleveland; friends, family, and associates of Russell; travel photographs to Hungary and other destinations; exteriors of the Ohio Fire Protection Systems office and Russell's campaign headquarters; and many photographs depicting the Night in Budapest event.

	Abstract:	The collection consists of photographs and copy negatives assembled from a variety of sources, including PG 273 United Auto Workers, Local 45 Negatives (Western Reserve Historical Society), the Cleveland Press collection of Cleveland State University, and former Press photographer William S. Nehez. The photographs were used in an audiovisual presentation for the January 18, 1989 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration at the Western Reserve Historical Society. The bulk of photographs are views of Dr. King's visits to Cleveland, Ohio and portraits of program honorees from the 1989 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.

	Abstract:	The Glenn L. Martin Company was founded by Glenn L. Martin, a pioneer airplane manufacturer. It incorporated in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917 and remained until 1929, when Martin moved the company to Essex, Maryland. The company produced aircraft for military use. The Glenn L. Martin Company also built mail and passenger planes. It eventually evolved into the Martin Marietta Corporation. The collection consists of views of various aircraft and blimps, the Cleveland plant, and an R.A.F. jet bomber in Essex, Maryland, after a 1950s transatlantic flight. Also includes group portraits of Glenn L. Martin employees, interior and aerial views of the Glenn L. Martin plant in Cleveland, and postcards of the Glenn L. Martin plant in Essex, Maryland.

	Abstract:	Eugene Bailey (1913-1942) was an African American from Cleveland, Ohio, who attended Virginia State College for Negroes, excelling in athletics. Bailey became physical education director at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Va. and then enlisted in the Navy at the start of World War II. In 1942, he was killed in an explosion at the Norfolk Navy Yard. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Eugene Bailey, his family and friends; and views of life at college, athletic events, and campuses, including Hampton College in Virginia.

	Abstract:	Louis Van Oeyen (1865-1946) was the first photographer hired as staff on a Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper, and a pioneer in many techniques and activities of photojournalism. Van Oeyen was hired as a Cleveland Press photographer in 1901, after his photographs of the water intake explosion disaster in Lake Erie, and the assassination of President William McKinley, were published in the Press. During his career at the Press, he shot portraiture, politics, disaster, crime, scandal, and sports photographs. His greatest love was baseball, and he became official photographer for the American League in 1908, and for the World Series until 1922. Van Oeyen also helped test new photographic equipment, most notably the General Electric flash bulb in 1938. He assisted other photographers at the beginning of their careers, including Margaret Bourke-White and Herman Seid. Van Oeyen died in 1946. The collection consists of photographs and negatives taken by photographer Louis Van Oeyen before and during his career as a Cleveland Press photographer. A large portion of the collection depicts sports, particularly baseball. Other subjects include technological innovation, politics, entertainment, automobiles, aviation, horse racing, and boxing. There are extensive series of images from the Ormond Beach, Florida, auto races; the National Air Races held in Cleveland, Ohio; famous aviators; dirigibles; and ship launchings. Political coverage includes international, national and local figures, among them several presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Roosevelt, and the coronation of King George VI of Great Britain. Celebrity portraits range from industrialists, including J. P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller, to entertainers, such as Buster Keaton and Yehudi Menuhin. Smaller bodies of subject material include photographs of crime, disaster, legal proceedings, and story art for fictional serial stories published by the newspaper. Crime illustration includes portraits of Cassie Chadwick. Disasters include the Collinwood School and Cleveland Clinic fires; floods; and aviation, automotive, and railroad wrecks. Legal coverage includes an extensive series on the John T. Scopes "Monkey Trial," including candid portraits of Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. The collection is strongest in images from the 1900s and the 1920s-1930s.

	Abstract:	Members of the Severance family were prominent bankers and industrialists in Cleveland, Ohio. The Severance family was also known for its philanthropic activities. Solon Severance, a Cleveland banker, was the son of Solomon Severance and Mary Helen Long, and a brother of Louis Severance. He was also a descendent of John Walworth, an early settler of Cleveland who was a civil engineer and was appointed in 1806 as the Custom Collector for the District of Erie. Solon's wife, Emily Allen, was the daughter of Dr. Dudley Allen, and the sister of prominent surgeon Dudley P. Allen. Solon and Emily's daughter, Julia Severance Millikin, was the wife of Benjamin Millikin, a noted Cleveland ophthalmologist. Julia's children included Helen Millikin Nash and Severance, Marianne, Dudley, and Louise Millikin. 	Abstract:	The collection consists of views of activities of the Union Army in South Carolina during the American Civil War. Included are views of Folly Island, Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, Lighthouse Inlet, and Morris Island. The bulk of the material depicts scenes from the siege of Charleston, particularly of Folly and Morris Islands. Included are views of various artillery batteries used and army buildings. The photographs were thought to have been taken by Lt. Philip Haas and Mr. Washington Peale, whose personal histories are unknown. The collection was acquired in 1912 by William P. Palmer for the Western Reserve Historical Society.

	Abstract:	Karamu House was founded in 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Russell W. and Rowena Woodham Jelliffe, in conjunction with the Second Presbyterian Church Men's Club, as the Neighborhood Association (later as the Playhouse Settlement), a settlement house promoting interracial activities and cooperation through the performing arts. The Jelliffes saw a need to provide activities and social services for the city's growing African American population, in order to assist in their transition from rural Southern life to an urban setting. The Playhouse Settlement was renamed Karamu Theater in 1927. By 1941, the entire settlement had taken the name Karamu House. The Dumas Dramatic Club was created to support and encourage interest and activities in the performing arts. In 1922, the theater troupe's name was changed to The Gilpin Players in honor of noted African American actor Charles Gilpin. During the 1920s and 1930s, works by many accomplished playwrights were produced at Karamu, including those of Zora Neale Hurston, Eugene O'Neill, and Langston Hughes, whose career was launched at Karamu. In 1939, the house was destroyed by fire. Rebuilding was not completed until 1949. The Jelliffes' mission of an interracial institution continued until the late 1960s, when, under the leadership of new director Kenneth Snipes, Karamu's mission became one of promoting African-American theater and plays specifically about the African-American experience. During this time a professional troupe of actors was formed. In 1982, Karamu formally returned to its original mission as an interracial organization. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Karamu House founders Russell and Rowena Jelliffe, administrators and staff, actors and performers, and community figures. Group portraits and views depict activities at Karamu, including classes, art exhibits, meetings, ceremonies, choral groups, clubs, and sports teams. Views of Karamu House facilities, buildings, and grounds, including photographs of the original buildings of the Playhouse Settlement, are included, as are views of plays performed. Notable individuals depicted include Garrett E. Morgan, Charles Gilpin, Al Fann, Dr. Ralph Bunche, Ida B. Wells, Eubie Blake, Noble Sissle, Harry E. Davis, James Weldon Johnson, Perry Como, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ruby Dee, Raymond St. Jacques, Archibald MacLeish, Judge Charles White, Rev. Earl Preston, Charles Sallee, Carl Stokes, Louis Stokes, Jane Addams, Emily Laster, Wilhelmina Roberson, Dakota Staton, Harriet Tubman, and Julian Mayfield. Groups depicted include the Keystone Club, Golden Age Club, Cheerio Circle, the Karamu Dancers, Camp Karamu, and the Karamu Nursery School.

	Abstract:	Thompson Products Inc. was established in 1900, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Cleveland Cap Screw Company. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of individual aircraft; reciprocating, jet, and rocket aviation power plants; personalities; famous flights; and miscellaneous images related to all aspects of aviation history through the mid-1960s. The collection represents the history and development of aviation airframe and power plant technology. Over 200 aircraft manufacturing types and over 100 power plant manufacturing types are represented, including numerous images of Curtiss and Wright aircraft, as well as many lesser known manufacturing types. The collection also contains many images of dirigibles, blimps, and balloons. The photographs in this collection were acquired by Thompson Products of Cleveland, Ohio from the Dearborn Library-Henry Ford Museum, the Wright Patterson Air Force Technical Museum, and from various aircraft and aviation related industries, including the Curtiss-Wright and Boeing corporations, and were used by Thompson Products as an aviation photographic reference source.
