| | | | Creator: | Mulcahy, Michael | | | | Dates: | 1862-1908 | | | | Abstract: | Michael Mulcahy (1839-1908) was enrolled as a private in the 6th United States Calvary in 1862 and was later promoted to sergeant, serving in the United States Civil War. Mulcahy received acclaim for his involvement in the famous Winchester Ride where he fought with General Sheridan in the Battle of Winchester. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on January 13, 1865. Mulcahy was born in County Cork, Ireland. After his soldier days, he came to Cleveland, Ohio, worked as a carpenter, and joined the volunteer fire department. He married Elizabeth Brennan on February 27, 1865 in St. Patrick's Church, Cleveland, Ohio. He later joined the first paid fire department organized in Cleveland. | | | | Creator: | Giddings, Calvin | | | | Dates: | 1830-1866 | | | | Abstract: | Calvin Giddings (1796-1875) was a farmer and resident of Rockport Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Born in New York, he married Mary Bennet in Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1821. In 1826, he purchased land in Rockport Township from George Peak Jr. in what is now Rocky River, Ohio. In addition to farming, beginning in 1829 Giddings ran a wool carding business in Rockport Township. The farmers of Rockport Township nominated him as a candidate for the office of Sheriff of Cuyahoga County in 1838. The census of 1850 lists him as owning a substantial farm in Rockport Township. While his son Chauncy Giddings is listed as a resident of Rockport Township in the 1860 census, there is no entry for Calvin. By the 1870 census, Calvin Giddings was living in Erie County, Ohio. He died April 4, 1875, and is buried, along with his wife, Mary and several children, in the Fairview Park (Rockport) Cemetery, Fairview Park, Ohio. | | | | Creator: | McFarland, William C. | | | | Dates: | 1855-1930 | | | | Abstract: | William C. McFarland (b. 1838-?) was born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, of Scots-Irish extraction. He was a descendant of the McFarlane Clan of Loch Sloy, Scotland. He was educated in Pennsylvania, and taught in Kentucky from 1859-1861. He then attended Ohio State and Union Law College of Cleveland, Ohio, graduating with a degree of A.B. In 1862 McFarland practiced law in Cleveland until 1864, when he joined the Quartermaster's Department of the Union Army at Nashville, Tennessee. He resumed his law practice in Cleveland after the war. He was elected by the Republican Party as a representative from Cuyahoga County to the Ohio General Assembly in 1871, serving until 1873. In 1875, he formed the law firm Critchfield & McFarland, engaging in corporate and commercial law. It was in business for two years, and following its demise, McFarland traveled to Europe. He wrote many letters during time spent overseas, detailing his experiences and observations to the Cleveland Herald. McFarland was a conservative Republican politician. In addition, he was ranked among the most successful lawyers in Cleveland. He married Anne (aka Annie) Carty (1892-1935) in Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland, on June 24, 1927. They arrived in New York in the late 1920s. Shortly thereafter, they traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, as Annie had a sister living in Cleveland at that time. Edward was born in Boyle, County Roscommon and Anne came from Roscommon town, County Roscommon, Ireland. Prior to coming to the United States, Edward worked as a shop assistant for D.I. Finnegan in Castlerea, County Roscommon for five years. In Cleveland, he obtained employment from the Chase, Brass and Copper Company as a shipping clerk from 1935 until 1953. The family lived on East 114th Street and St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland. Edward frequented the West Side Irish American Club in Cleveland. He and Anne had three children, (Edward) Patrick, Mary Josephine and Cyril, who were born in Ireland and are currently living in Cleveland, Ohio. Two of the most notable family members were Orramel and Edward Fitch. Orramel H. Fitch (1803-1882), was a resident of Ashtabula County, Ohio. There he was elected to represent the county in the State Legislature. He served as county prosecuting attorney in 1841 and 1842. Six years later, he helped to organize the Farmer's Bank of Ashtabula County. Mr. Fitch was also instrumental in the writing of The Williams Brothers' History of Ashtabula County in 1878. Edward Hubbard Fitch (1837-1897) was the son of Orramel H. Fitch (1803-1882). In 1869 Mr. Fitch was elected to the State legislature. Edward Fitch was a lawyer by profession. He served as the local justice of the peace and as county prosecuting attorney like his father has before him. The McLaughlins established the Maureen McLaughlin Scholarship for Music, awarded annually at the Cleveland Feis cultural competition, in memory of their daughter Maureen. From 1984-1989 the group met at The Civic, 3130 Mayfield Road, in Cleveland Heights. The congregation acquired its Torah scroll in 1986, and introduced varied programming, including Sabbath and holiday services, Passover seders, house dedications, and baby namings. In 1989 the congregation moved its services to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Cleveland, 2728 Lancashire Road, in Cleveland Heights, and also affiliated with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, which is the synagogue association of the Reform movement. In 2001 Rachel Rembrandt, a graduate of Hebrew Union College, became the congregations' first permanent rabbi. Its facilities were moved to Carnegie Avenue in 1908, and to its present site on Shaker Boulevard in 1927. After a brief merger with MetroHealth Medical Center in the early 1990s, it was sold to Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation and its Ohio partner, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine in 1997. The non-profit proceeds of the sale were used to create the Saint Luke's Foundation.
