 Abstract:  The Cleveland Foundation was the first community trust established in the United States. It was organized in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914 by Frederick J. Goff and the Board of Directors of the Cleveland Trust Company. It has provided funds for educational and artistic development and for humanitarian purposes such as housing and aid to children and the handicapped. The collection consists of grant files, both accepted and declined, which include agreements, award letters, brochures, budgets, correspondence, evaluations, financial statements, forms, memoranda, newsletters, notes, press releases, programs, proposals, and reports. All photographs and audio/visual media have been retained in their respective grant files. The Cleveland Foundation Assistance to Other Foundations series contains much the same document types as the grant files. Other document types contained in the collection include annual reports, articles, budgets, correspondence, declaration of trusts, forms, indexes, lists, memoranda, minutes, newsletters, notes, and reports. The dates of the grant files and assistance to other files series are not necessarily a date range of what is in the file, but are the dates given as the grant periods on the paperwork contained in the files.

2808Title:  West High School Newspaper Records

 Abstract:  West High School was the second public high school to be located in Cleveland, Ohio. It originated as a branch of Central High School in the 3rd floor of a grammar school on West 45th Street in 1852. It moved to locations on Clinton Avenue and Bridge Avenue before settling permanently in 1902 in a new building at Franklin and West 69th, where it became a 6-year combined junior and senior high. After its amalgamation in the new Lincoln-West High in 1970, West High's building was razed after serving for a short time as West Jr. High and replaced by the Joseph Gallagher Intermediate School. The collection consists of awards given to the newspaper and a Popeye Cartoon.

 Abstract:  Pilgrim Congregational Church was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1854 as University Heights Congregational Church in the Near West Side neighborhood of Tremont, then known as University Heights.To accommodate the growing congregation, the current church located at 2592 West 14th Street was built in 1893-1894 by architect S.R. Badgeley, whose unique design combined worship space with the growing need for a community center, including a library and the first kindergarten in the city of Cleveland. By 1919 the building had expanded to include a gymnasium complete with shower rooms, a boxing ring, and bowling alleys. Pilgrim Congregational Church was also the first building on the West Side of Cleveland to be fitted with electricity, operating its own power plant for several years. Pilgrim Congregational Church is now (2014) affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The collection consists of church bulletins, correspondence, financial documents, historical records, histories, invoices, ledgers, marriage licenses, meeting minutes, membership applications, pledge cards, receipts, Sunday school records, and withdrawal cards.

 Abstract:  The Women's Law Fund was a nonprofit organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1972 dedicated to eradicating gender discrimination in employment, education, government benefits, and housing. Under the direction of Jane M. Picker and Lizabeth A. Moody, the organization secured attorneys and provided funding for litigation related to women's issues. Most notably, the fund supported LaFleur, et al. v. Cleveland Board of Education, et al., a case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark ruling concerning mandatory maternity leave for female employees. In the 1990s the fund focused on female age discrimination and discrimination faced by American women employed overseas by American companies. The Women's Law Fund disbanded in 2006. The collection consists of Women's Law Fund files related to one case of gender discrimination filed against the City of Cleveland regarding its fire department: Zamlen et al. v. City of Cleveland, et al. It includes appendices, balance sheets, brochures, cassette tapes, charts, consent decrees, contracts, correspondence, course catalogs, court documents, court opinions, court orders, depositions, dockets, exhibits, flyers, forms, handbooks, handouts, indices, journal articles, legal briefs, lists, magazines, manuals, memoranda, motions, newsletters, newspaper articles and clippings, notes, pamphlets, pleadings, printed case law, reports, statements, statistics, transcripts, trial summaries, VHS tapes, and workbooks.

 Abstract:  Founded in 1953 by Afzal Nabi, Masjid al-Mumin ("the Mosque of the Believer") was first located at 10609 Superior Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Imam Mutawaf A. Shaheed and the Islamic Revivalist Movement (IRM, Inc.) came to the organization in 1969. In the early 1970s, Masjid al-Mumin/IRM Inc. began a longstanding relationship with the Ohio correctional system. It also joined Dar ul-Islam, a network of black Sunni mosques who advocated deliverance from an unjust, immoral American culture through Islam. Masjid al-Mumin was the first mosque outside of New York to participate in Dar-ul Islam. Today the mosque is located at 2690 Martin Luther King Junior Drive in Cleveland. The collection consists of applications, clippings, correspondence, educational documents, financial documents, forms, publications, reports, receipts, and registers.
