A graduate of Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College (Alcorn State University) in Mississippi, Perkins was the co-owner of Douglass and Perkins Dry Goods and Groceries with H. D. Douglass. His wife, Mattie Martin Perkins (1872-1964) was also a graduate of Alcorn and a teacher. Her father, John Adams Martin, was a college professor and the president of Alcorn State University in Mississippi from 1911-1915. In 1920 the Settlement became a member of the Welfare Federation of Cleveland. In 1988 it included an Extension Program with several branches. Programs included Music Therapy, Special Education, a nursery, an advisory committee to aid other institutions, and a consortium with area universities. In 2008 the name was changed to The Music Settlement. In 2014 the Music Settlement opened a satellite location at the former Bop Stop jazz club in the Ohio City neighborhood on Cleveland's west side. In its first year, the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland served nearly 500 people; in 2009, it handled more than 11,000 cases, with a staff of 55 attorneys and a network of 1,400 volunteer lawyers. Major concerns for the Legal Aid Society during the first decade of the twenty-first century included the exploitation of low-income utility customers, and victims of predatory mortgage lending and fraudulent proprietary schools. It remains the fifth oldest legal aid society in the United States. The group has performed in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Dayton and Marietta, Ohio, and traveled to Ireland in 1976, 1978, and 1980. | | | | Creator: | Hough Bakeries, Inc. | | | | Dates: | 1955-1962 | | | | Abstract: | Hough Bakeries Inc. was established by Lionel Pile as Hough Home Bakery in 1903 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was located at 8708 Hough Avenue. The company grew to become the largest multiple unit bakery in Ohio, and one of ten largest nationwide. Expansion into the suburbs began in the 1920s. In 1941, the former Star Bakery Company plant was purchased, and Hough operations and headquarters were moved there. The company incorporated in 1945, and the name was changed to Hough Bakeries, Inc. in 1952. Hough Foods, producer and distributor of frozen foods, became a subsidiary to the parent company in 1955. Hough's catering services, begun in the 1930s, became a subsidiary in 1956, when the company underwent corporate reorganization. 48 retail outlets operated into the early 1980s. In 1990, the Pile family sold the business to Amerifoods. In 1992, the company closed all remaining stores, and filed for Chapter Seven bankruptcy. The catering division was sold to the International Exposition Center, Brook Park, Ohio. The company name and recipes were purchased by Kraft General Foods.
