AMIT Women is an organization of orthodox Jewish Zionist women that provides support for poor children in Israel. Throughout the history of the organization AMIT built up a network of vocational schools, homes for children, surrogate family residences and other projects for youth in Israel. In Cleveland, AMIT has been an active part of the Jewish community, organizing numerous fundraising dinners, luncheons, and other events along the Jewish holidays to support both the local Jewish community and to raise money for their numerous projects in Israel. Hauserman Company was a leading producer of of movable interior walls for offices, factories, and schools, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. The company was founded by Earl F. Hauserman (1885-1943) who bought out part of the building supplies dealer for whom he worked and organized the E.F. Hauserman Co. in 1913. The company became a leading manufacturer of interior steel partitions and was a major defense contractor during World War II. Following the war, E.F. Hauerman's sons, Fred M. Hauserman (1909-1972) and William F. Hauserman (1920-2012) led the company, including expansion into Canada and Europe. In the mid 1970s, E.F. Hauserman Company consolidated with its principle subsidiaries to become Hauserman, Inc., In 1978 the company acquired Sunar, a Canadian office furniture manufacturer and in 1983 became Sunar-Hauserman, Inc. The company closed in 1989 due to changing economic conditions. The collection consists of advertisements, agreements, applications, articles, autobiographies, autograph books and autographs, biographical sketches, certificates, correspondence, deeds, diaries, drawings, envelopes, genealogies, histories, indentures, invoices, letters, lists, manuscripts, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, papers, photographs, poems, receipts, reports, scripts, speech transcripts, telegrams, and other material. Western Reserve Historical Society library staff began to describe these manuscripts in this finding aid in 2015. | | | | Creator: | Weisberg, Leon | | | | Dates: | 2006-2015 | | | | Abstract: | Leon Weisberg was born to a Jewish family in Jedrzejow, Poland, in 1929, and lived in Sedziszow with his six siblings until the German army invaded Poland in 1939. For the next several years, Weisberg and his family were subjected to the constant horrors of the camps and ghettos of Poland, with Weisberg himself being sent from Sedziszow to Skarzysko-Kamienna to Buchenwald and, finally, to Theresienstadt, where he was liberated by the Russian army in 1945. After the war, Weisberg and his surviving relatives slowly began to immigrate outward and Weisberg immigrated to Cleveland in 1951, working in various businesses as an electrician until his retirement. | | | | Creator: | Katz Family | | | | Dates: | 1900-1992 | | | | Abstract: | The Katz family began emigrating to the Cleveland area in the 1880s from their home of Podzelva, Lithuania (then part of the Russian Empire). The Katzes were very active in the Cleveland Jewish community. Aaron Katz and his son Solomon David prepared a "booklet of remembrance" (a history of their family) in 1905. This "booklet", a large ledger with writing in Biblical Hebrew by Cleveland area scribe Yaacov Landy, was updated with the names of family members through 1913. A composite photograph of individual portraits of over one hundred family members (not part of the ledger) was included in "An American Story", the core exhibit of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, opened in 2005. The collection includes a photocopy of this photograph and a guide to the names of those pictured. Walzer (1900-1988) was born in Austria-Hungary in 1900 and emigrated to the United States in 1913. Walzer found work in the women's garment industry where he met his wife, Fanny Harkavy, who had emigrated from Lithuania and worked alongside him at Keller-Kohn. Their only daughter, Laura, was born shortly after their marriage in 1930. Now the Gross Schechter Day School, the institution is currently housed in Pepper Pike and serves nearly 260 students.
