| | | | Creator: | Nordson Foundation | | | | Dates: | 1952-1988 | | | | Abstract: | The Nordson Foundation (1952-1988) was originally created by Walter G. and Virginia Nord. Walter Nord was the president of U. S. Automatic Corporation (f. 1909) of Amherst, Ohio, a company which manufactured screw machine parts for the automotive industry. Walter Nord and his sons, Evan and Eric Nord, organized the Nordson Corporation in 1954 as a subsidiary of U. S. Automatic Corporation. The Nordson Corporation, headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, is a multinational company that designs, manufactures, and markets systems that apply adhesives, sealants, and coatings to a broad range of consumer and industrial products during the manufacturing process. The Nordson Foundation was a philanthropic organization which provided financial support primarily in the areas of public service, social problems, family services, and education. The Nord family, including Walter's sons Eric and Evan Nord, and Cleveland lawyer William Ginn, guided the foundation through 1980. In 1988 the foundation was reorganized to create the Nord Family Foundation and the Nordson Corporation Foundation. Since its inception, the Nord Family Foundation has primarily served Lorain County, Ohio, and has been based in the Lorain-Elyria area. As of 1993, the foundation was headquartered in Elyria, Ohio. Its charitable activities, however, have sometimes reached into neighboring locales, particularly Cuyahoga County and Cleveland, and touched other areas of Ohio and the nation. In addition to the foundation, the Nord family is also noted for its involvement in the development of inventions, including innovations in areas as diverse as spray painters and robotics. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, minutes of the board of trustees, policies and procedures, a mission statement, resolutions, correspondence, financial reports, contract bids and specifications, newspaper clippings, memoranda, pamphlets, publications, accounting journals, budgets, tax returns, affidavits, and materials related to projects and activities of the foundation, with grant proposals (1980-1984) compromising the bulk of the materials. The files include the minutes, cases, photographs, and organizational materials of the Neighborhood Concepts Company (1984-1986), a Lorain-Elyria housing rehabilitation program initiated through the funding of the Nordson Foundation. | | | | Creator: | Gift of Bellefaire JCB | | | | Dates: | 1903-2005 | | | | Abstract: | Bellefaire JCB, a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed adolescents, is the oldest Jewish social service agency in Cleveland, Ohio. It was dedicated on July 14, 1868 as the Jewish Orphan Asylum, established to care for Civil War orphans. By 1900, more than 400 orphans lived there. The name was changed to the Jewish Orphan Home (JOH) in 1919, and later to Bellefaire when its facilities moved to the corner of Belvoir and Fairmount boulevards in 1929. In 1941 the Orthodox Jewish Children's home merged with the Welfare Association for Jewish Children and thus became the Jewish Children's Bureau, which then formed a functional merger with Bellefaire to become Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau (from which the current name Bellefaire JCB is derived). In 1942 the orphanage changed its focus to include residential therapeutic care for emotionally disturbed children and stopped accepting orphans in 1943. In 1954, Bellefaire opened its admissions to children of all faiths and today (2019) provides counseling, substance abuse treatment, foster care, adoption services, and residential treatment. The Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association was established in 1888 to serve and connect the orphans who formerly lived at the Jewish Orphan Home. The Association held Homecomings each year in Cleveland and had several active chapters located throughout the country. "Graduates" of JOH were designated by the year of their confirmation class. | | | | Creator: | Society Corporation | | | | Dates: | 1836-1987 | | | | Abstract: | Society Corporation was Ohio's first registered bank holding company, formed in 1958 when the Society for Savings (founded in 1849 as a mutual savings bank) was merged into Society National Bank (a stock bank organized in 1956 to provide commercial banking services as a subsidiary of Society for Savings). Myron T. Herrick was president of Society for Savings from 1894-1905 and 1908-1921. A pioneer in issuing term and capital loans during the Depression, Society was also a leader in marketing and promotional methods for attracting new depositors. The unprecedented unification of Society for Savings and Society National Bank in 1958 was orchestrated by president Mervin B. France. Litigation regarding the merger was not settled until 1962. By 1989, Society Corporation had affiliates in four regions of Ohio and controlled assets of over $9 billion. Its most formidable acquisition was that of Centran Corporation in 1985, itself a regional multi-bank holding company. The collection consists of records of the Society for Savings, Society National Bank, and Society Corporation, including acts of incorporation, charters and bylaws, histories, passbooks, personal papers of past presidents (especially Samuel H. Mather), minutes of trustees' and annual meetings from 1849, annual financial reports and quarterly statements, ledger books, administrative and secretarial files, bank newsletters, news and publicity releases, and scrapbooks. Included are files on bank "runs", World War I Liberty Loan drives, 1955 legislative activity regarding the formation of Society National Bank, the merger of Society for Savings into Society National Bank and the creation of Society Corporation. The collection also contains branch acquisition files and files of affiliate acquisitions, i.e. Centran Corporation and Central National Bank of Cleveland. Of particular note are reports on attracting new depositors, public relations and advertising files, and material on the construction and renovation of Society's headquarters. | | | | Creator: | Women's Centennial Commission | | | | Dates: | 1891-1971 | | | | Abstract: | The Women's Centennial Commission of Cleveland, Ohio, was founded in 1895 as the Women's Auxiliary of the Cleveland Centennial Commission. The group formally became a part of the Cleveland Centennial Commission on September 25, 1895, when its name was changed to the Woman's Department of the Cleveland Centennial Commission. Mary B. Ingham served as the first president, and Catherine Hitchcock Avery was chairman of the executive board. Woman's Day, a part of the centennial celebration, was held July 28, 1896. In December 1896, an aluminum casket time capsule was filled by members and sealed, to be opened one hundred years later in 1996 during the bicentennial of the founding of Cleveland. The casket was given to the Western Reserve Historical Society for safekeeping. In 1898, the executive committee of the Woman's Department became a permanent organization. Each member designated a successor, and yearly meetings were held. In 1921, a second aluminum casket time capsule was prepared, commemorating the one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of Cleveland. This casket was not sealed until 1927, so that volume five of the Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve, a project begun in 1896 by the Woman's Department, and edited by Gertrude Van Rensselaer Wickham, could be included. That same year, the name of the group was changed to the Women's Centennial Commission. Continued by the successors of the women of 1896 and 1921, a sealed aluminum casket was placed at the Western Reserve Historical Society during the sesquicentennial celebration of Cleveland in 1946. At the one hundred seventy-fifth anniversary of Cleveland in 1971, a fourth time capsule was prepared. The group was revived as the bicentennial of 1996 approached, and in 1996, the contents of the time capsules were unpacked by lineal descendants of the original members. The collection consists of the contents of four aluminum casket time capsules from the years 1896, 1921, 1946, and 1971. The contents include letters, constitutions and bylaws, minutes, resolutions, financial statements, programs, lists, certificates, cards, photographs, invitations, addresses, speeches, essays, poems, newspaper clippings, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, brochures, directories, bulletins, notes, books, pamphlets, annual reports, yearbooks, biographical and genealogical sketches, business cards, medals, ribbons, coins, flags, badges, a gavel, drawings, watercolor prints, maps, calendars, and a poster. Material from philanthropic, social service, cultural, and religious organizations and agencies of the time is included. Documentation on the formation and organization of the Women's Centennial Commission is included, as is a large amount of personal letters and photographs addressed to their descendants by Commission members. The collection also documents how the Cleveland centennial was planned and celebrated in 1896, and how subsequent anniversary years were celebrated. Accredited by the state of Ohio, degree programs in Judaic studies are offered, as are lifelong learning programs on Jewish topics for adults. In 1947, two Cleveland institutions founded in the 1920s, the Jewish Teachers Institute and the Beth Midrash L'Morim (Hebrew Teacher Training School), merged to form the Cleveland Institute of Jewish Studies, under the auspices of the Bureau of Jewish Education. In 1952, the Cleveland Institute of Jewish Studies became an independent agency. Through the initiative of Rebecca Aronson Brickner, the institute became known as the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies in 1963. It shared space with the Bureau of Jewish Education in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, before occupying its own building in Beachwood, Ohio. It affiliated with the Ohio National Guard in 1877, formed part of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1898, was absorbed into the 135th Field Artillery in 1918, and reorganized in 1920 as Troop A of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. It became part of the 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1947. The Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery was also founded in 1877 to quell labor violence. It disbanded by 1905. The collection consists of photographs of Troop A, of Cleveland, Ohio, and the 135th Field Artillery. One album contains photographs of Troop A training in August 1912 at Novelty, Ohio. Another album depicts members of Troop A patrolling the Mexican border during 1916 and of the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. Loose photographs contain group portraits and other images which chronicle the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. Bolton served on the committees of Indian Affairs (1940) and Foreign Affairs (1941-1968), participating in foreign aid hearings and conducting study trips abroad, including a trip to the Middle East in 1947 and one to Africa in 1955. She served as a congressional delegate to the United Nations Eighth General Assembly, and was involved with the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and helped organize the Accokee Foundation to protect the Potomac shoreline across from Mount Vernon. Mrs. Bolton had a long-time interest in nursing and nursing education and provided funds to establish the nursing school at Western Reserve University, as well as founding the Payne Fund to assist a variety of educational and other charitable programs. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, publications, clippings, etc. generated during, or pertaining to, Bolton's service in Congress. | | | | Creator: | DeFreesez and Henricks Family | | | | Dates: | 1867-1876 | | | | Abstract: | Anthony DeFreesez, (1788-1873) one of twelve children, was born May 4, 1788 in Rockbridge, Virginia. He died in South Bend, Indiana. His father was Joseph Hutton DeFreesez, (ca. 1753-1826) born in New York, New York, and his mother was Mary Start (ca. 1755-ca. 1829). According to Anthony's family narrative, DeFreesez is French in origin and the family came to New York, then known as New Amsterdam, from Holland. The name may have originally been DeForest and evolved to DeFreesez due to a Dutch pronunciation. Dr. John A. Henricks (1811-ca. 1876), great-great-grandfather of the collection donor, was born August 10, 1811 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. His family soon moved to Champaign County, Ohio. He studied medicine at Urbana with lectures in Cincinnati and then began to practice medicine. He continued to practice medicine until the early 1830s when he moved to the South Bend, Indiana area. He was married to Julia Comparet ca. 1833 and they had two children who both died in infancy. Julia died around this time as well, and John relocated to Joliet, Illinois to work on the Illinois and Michigan Canal and then become the warden of the state prison in Joliet until 1842 when he returned to the South Bend area. He remarried in 1841 to Harriet Sanger (Langer?) and they had six children of which only one, Edward W. Henricks, survived. Edward W. Henricks, son of John A., was born ca. 1849. He served aboard the U.S.S. Canandaigua in the late 1860s. His log of a voyage from October 25, 1867-November 20 1868 is included in this collection. He was married around 1872 to Elizabeth (unknown maiden name) and they had three children. Louise (b. ca. 1874) and John (b. ca. 1876) were both born in Indiana and Harold (ca. 1890-1955) was born in Ohio. S The collection consists of a family narrative, log of a voyage on the U.S.S. | | | | Creator: | Van Oeyen, Louis | | | | Dates: | 1895-1945 | | | | Abstract: | Louis Van Oeyen (1865-1946) was the first photographer hired as staff on a Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper, and a pioneer in many techniques and activities of photojournalism. Van Oeyen was hired as a Cleveland Press photographer in 1901, after his photographs of the water intake explosion disaster in Lake Erie, and the assassination of President William McKinley, were published in the Press. During his career at the Press, he shot portraiture, politics, disaster, crime, scandal, and sports photographs. His greatest love was baseball, and he became official photographer for the American League in 1908, and for the World Series until 1922. Van Oeyen also helped test new photographic equipment, most notably the General Electric flash bulb in 1938. He assisted other photographers at the beginning of their careers, including Margaret Bourke-White and Herman Seid. Van Oeyen died in 1946. The collection consists of photographs and negatives taken by photographer Louis Van Oeyen before and during his career as a Cleveland Press photographer. A large portion of the collection depicts sports, particularly baseball. Other subjects include technological innovation, politics, entertainment, automobiles, aviation, horse racing, and boxing. There are extensive series of images from the Ormond Beach, Florida, auto races; the National Air Races held in Cleveland, Ohio; famous aviators; dirigibles; and ship launchings. Political coverage includes international, national and local figures, among them several presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Roosevelt, and the coronation of King George VI of Great Britain. Celebrity portraits range from industrialists, including J. P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller, to entertainers, such as Buster Keaton and Yehudi Menuhin. Smaller bodies of subject material include photographs of crime, disaster, legal proceedings, and story art for fictional serial stories published by the newspaper. Crime illustration includes portraits of Cassie Chadwick. Disasters include the Collinwood School and Cleveland Clinic fires; floods; and aviation, automotive, and railroad wrecks. Legal coverage includes an extensive series on the John T. Scopes "Monkey Trial," including candid portraits of Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. She was the Director of Jewish Family & Adult Education at the Gross Schechter Day School. She was formerly a Curriculum Associate at the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland and a Senior Educator for Melitz. Currently, Auerbach lives part of the year in Shaker Heights and part of the year in Jerusalem, and as of 2019 was writing regularly about life in Israel for the Cleveland Jewish News. Walter Jaslow was born in 1922. In 1981, Walter Jaslow spearheaded the Jewish Chaplaincy Hospital visitation program at University Hospitals (UH). He served as chaplain at the old Montefiore Home on Mayfield Road until his retirement in 1996. In the last years of his life, Jaslow volunteered at Menorah Park, where he took great joy in playing music for residents. Jaslow died on September 27, 2000 at age 78 in Cleveland.
