He is the grandson of American president William Howard Taft. He married Frances Prindle (December 12, 1921-May 14, 2017) on June 19, 1943 and they had four children: Frederick I. (Rick) (b. June 26, 1945), Thomas P. (b. July 19, 1948), Cynthia B. (b. May 24, 1950), and Seth Tucker (Tucker) (b. March 4, 1953). They were active members of the greater Cleveland, Ohio, cultural, civic, and political community. Operating via a series of committees, the association over the years has investigated misconduct by lawyers, judges, sheriffs, and police, which has resulted in resignations and/or disbarment. The collection consists of minutes, agendas, financial materials, correspondence, memoranda, directories, records of the Court Management Project, a subject file, scrapbooks and issues of the Cleveland Bar Association journal. Stanford was a lawyer active in Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish organizations and in the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party. When he immigrated in 1920 from Poland to the United States, his name was Meier Spokojny. By 1921 his name was Meyer Spocony, and by 1929 his name had been changed to Myron Spocony Stanford. From 1941 to 1945, he served as an assistant police prosecutor for the City of Cleveland. He ran unsuccessfully for several political positions. At various times he served as president of the United Jewish Religious Schools, Fairmount Temple Men's Club, B'nai B'rith Mid-Day Lodge, B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, and Masada Chapter, Zionist Organization of America. He chaired the performing arts committee of the Jewish Community Center and was active in Yiddish theater productions there. The collection consists of programs and correspondence relating to Jewish organizations with which Stanford was involved; briefs, book reviews, and scripts written by Stanford; newspaper clippings, diaries, diplomas, awards; and a scrapbook. Voinovich | | | | Dates: | 1977-1989 | | | | Abstract: | George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate. The collection consists of the mayor's office files transferred in 1989 to the Western Reserve Historical Society as an agent of the Ohio State Archives under the Ohio Public Records Law. The collection consists of genealogies, biographical sketches, correspondence, diaries, journals, account books, appointment books, ledgers, stock certificates, minutes, leases, articles of incorporation, wills, deeds, corporate inventories, maps, newspaper and magazine clippings, tax assessments and returns, diplomas, certificates, military orders, and discharge papers. Material is included on several banking institutions, including Garfield Savings Bank, The Western Reserve Trust Company, Metropolitan National Savings Bank, and the East End Savings and Trust Company. Material on Ford family involvement in the construction and management of the Williamson Building is included, as is family involvement in other real estate enterprises, including The New Amsterdam Company, One Euclid Company, and the Ford McCaslin Company. Involvement in various legal firms by H. Clark, Horatio, and David K. Ford is well documented, as is David K. Ford's role in the organization and operation of the Lubrizol Corporation and Lubrizol Foundation. Family involvement with the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, and with other philanthropic and social service organizations, such as the American Red Cross, the Maternal Health Association, University Hospitals, and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, is documented. Family members were also involved with the Congregational City Missionary Society, the Congregational Home Missionary Society, the Schauffler Missionary Training School (later Schauffler College of Religious and Social Work), and the National Council of the Congregational Churches of the United States. David K. Ford's involvement with Defiance College is documented. David and Elizabeth Brooks Ford's commitment to community service and social reform is well documented in this collection, including correspondence with others sharing their interests, such as Ralph Hayes of the City Club, Dorothy Adams Hamilton Brush with the Maternal Health Association, Agnes Brooks Young with the Cleveland Playhouse, and Katherine Gill Brooks of the Visiting Nurse Association. Of particular interest is the correspondence of H. Clark Ford with the notorious swindler Cassie Chadwick.
