It was created in 1940 as the Women's Auxiliary of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County Medical Society. Since its inception, the auxiliary has assisted the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland in many of its projects designed to promote and improve public health. The organization also submits a monthly column to the Cleveland Physician, a publication of the Academy. The collection consists of minutes, scrapbooks, and Presidents' Books, created each year by the standing president. | | | | Creator: | Women's Art Club of Cleveland | | | | Dates: | 1912-1962 | | | | Abstract: | The Women's Art Club of Cleveland was established in 1912 in the Gage Gallery as the first exclusively female art organization in Cleveland, Ohio. The club formed when the Bohemian Club split into a men's club, The Arts Club (later The Cleveland Society of Artists), and a women's club, The Women's Art Club of Cleveland. The mission of the club was to bring female artists together in order to facilitate community and higher artistic ideals. Also, the club wanted to advance the artistic interests of Cleveland through educational programs and exhibitions of members' artwork. Further, they sought recognition, respect, and support based on their exhibitions from the Cleveland community with an interest in the city's cultural growth. Women became members by filing applications and being voted in by the club. The four classes of membership (active, associate, sustaining, and life) were based on whether or not the woman created artwork. Active members created artwork, but associate members did not. Associate members had an interest in art, but did not vote or hold office. Sustaining members were active or associate members who toke a larger financial responsibility in the club. Also, life members were active or associate members who paid a designated fee. The Board of Trustees had ultimate control over the club. The Trustees elected from among themselves the President, Vice-President, Recording and Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer. Various committees conducted the activities of the club. Exhibitions and social events were the main focus of the club. The organization's constitution stated that the "object of the League shall be to foster interest among its members in the social, economic, and civic conditions of their community and to make efficient their volunteer service." The organization served the community through various activities such as musical and theatrical performances, volunteer drives, and philanthropy and among other activities to respond to community needs. It was responsible for bringing to Cleveland many of its early orchestral and musical performances. In partnership with Adella Prentiss Hughes, Fortnightly presented the Symphony Orchestra Concerts which generated the interest in symphonic music that made it possible to organize the Cleveland Orchestra. It later helped establish the Cleveland Music School Settlement and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Fortnightly's role as a concert-agency diminished as Cleveland developed into a music center, and the club turned its attention to awarding performing opportunities for its members and other musicians in the Cleveland area. Fortnightly continues to be an important charter member of the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. The collection consists of minutes, programs, yearbooks, bulletins, a scrapbook, and record books which were compiled at the turn of the century from minute books, members' records, yearbooks, programs and reference works. It was founded in 1919 by several of the first women copy writers and commercial artists in the city. Early members included DuMont Grant, advertising manager of Halle Brothers Company, and Freda Gonder, Belle Hoffman, and Ruth Jenkins of the May Company. Others were employed in various advertising offices of department stores and women's specialty shops. As advertising expanded and more women found employment in the field, the club soon included those working in radio and television broadcasting, public relations, printing, direct mail, ad specialties, and newspapers. In addition to professional concerns, the group maintained an extensive social schedule, including benefit activities and community contests. Betty Ott was an active member of the club.
