 Abstract:  Aaron Olmsted was an original shareholder of the Connecticut Land Company and early settler of the Western Reserve (Ohio). He owned and sold off all the land in Franklin Township, Portage County, Ohio. He also founded Poland, Ohio, and gave his name to North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Olmsted Township, three suburbs of Cleveland. The collection consists of notes taken during a survey of Franklin Township, Portage County, Ohio, which commenced in 1803.

232Title:  Diary of Turhand Kirtland During His Visits to Ohio

 Abstract:  Turhand Kirtland (1755-1844) was a land agent for the Connecticut, Big Beaver, and Union land companies, and founder of Poland, Ohio. Kirtland owned almost 2,000 acres in the township named after him, although he never permanently resided there. Kirtland Township was an "equalizing" township used by the Connecticut Land Company to compensate for losses of those settlers or investors who received swampy or poor land throughout the Western Reserve. The collection consists of a copy of a diary kept by Kirtland on his travels throughout the Western Reserve.

 Abstract:  John Barr was a prominent resident of Cleveland, Ohio, and officer of various literary and historical organizations. The collection consists of letters addressed to Barr in answer to his solicitations for information concerning the first settlers in, and the early history of, Cleveland and the Western Reserve; together with Barr's reminiscences of Wooster, Ohio, ca. 1873. Correspondents include John Ackley, Amzi Atwater, D.H. Beardsley, Gilman Bryant, Lewis Cass, N. Crookshank, Oliver Culver, D.C. Doan, Thomas Goodman, Julius C.  Abstract:  Benjamin Oviatt, from Litchfield, Connecticut, was one of the original settlers of Hudson, Ohio. His brother, Heman, dealt in land in Cuyahoga, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties while a resident of Hudson, Richfield, and Cleveland, Ohio. Schuyler R. Oviatt was Treasurer of Summit County in the 1870s. The collection consists of deeds, agreements, financial papers, and certificates of Benjamin, Heman, Elizabeth, Orson, Marvin, Nathaniel, and Schuyler R. Oviatt. Includes a report of the Summit County Treasurer (1876), a catalogue of books in the Richfield Sunday School (1835), the constitution of the Academic Institution of Richfield and a list of subscribers (1847), papers relating to the Congregational Church of Richfield (1835-1858), and notes on the history of Richfield. Also includes several letters from the abolitionist, John Brown.

 Abstract:  Wallace Hugh Cathcart (1865-1942) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, bibliophile associated with the Western Reserve Historical Society as president (1907-1913) and director (1913-1942), acquiring many of that organization's finest manuscript collections. Cathcart was also vice-president and general manager of Burrows Bros., a prosperous Cleveland book dealer, and was one of the founders, and later vice-president, of the American Booksellers & Publishers Association. Cathcart was a member of the executive committee of the Cuyahoga County Centennial Celebration, chaired by William H. Hunt and held in 1910. The week-long centennial included various dedications, street pageants, a water carnival and an aeroplane meet. During the celebration, the $3 million Cuyahoga County Courthouse and a new post office were dedicated. The Historical Commission of Ohio was created in 1918 to collect and preserve materials pertaining to Ohio's role in World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, official programs and badges and related publicity material concerning the Cuyahoga County Centennial celebration of 1910, including typescript copies of speeches given at dedicatory events and poems submitted about the county. Also included are reports and correspondence by William Farrand Felch, executive secretary of the Historical Commission of Ohio (1919-1921), concerning the demise of the Commission's collection, 1920-1921. The collection also contains newspaper clippings and miscellaneous research notes and memoranda compiled by Cathcart pertaining to various explorers and explorations of North America.
