321Title:  McIlrath Tavern Account Book

 Abstract:  The McIlrath Tavarn was a tavern and well-known hostelry and general store established in 1804 by Alexander McIlrath, and located on the northwest corner of Euclid and Superior in East Cleveland, Ohio. McIlrath's brother Abner opened a tavern at the same location in 1837, which distinguished itself as a local meeting place and important community center for many decades. People came from Doan's Corners and Euclid Township to listen to candidates and vote. It was torn down ca. 1890. The collection consists of an account book listing customers' accounts.

 Abstract:  W. H. Matchett was a medical student at Cleveland Medical College (Western Reserve College Medical Department). Cleveland Medical College was founded in 1844 by Jared P. Kirtland, one of America's leading naturalists, and John Delamater, Horace Ackley, and John Lang Cassels. The nucleus of the college was formed due to a split in 1843 in the Willoughby Medical College (1834-1847) of the Willoughby University of Lake Erie. The collection consists of a notebook which includes notes taken by Matchett during medical lectures given by Drs. Jared P. Kirtland and John Lang Cassels.

 Abstract:  Nathaniel Spencer (1748-1825) was a farmer in Claridon, Geauga County, Ohio. He was formerly a resident of New Hartford, Connecticut. The collection consists of two diaries and a letter. The diaries contain meteorological data and farm activities recorded by Spencer.

 Abstract:  George A. Myers (1859-1930) was the owner of the Hollenden Barber Shop, which became his steppingstone into Republican politics in the 1890s, Myers became an influential African American politician and civic leader in Cleveland, Ohio, and a close ally to Marcus Hanna. Myers was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892, 1896, and 1900 and was instrumental in the development of the McKinley-Hanna organization and in the election of Hanna to the United States Senate. During the 1920s, Myers adopted a new tone of militancy in racial matters. The collection consists of correspondence between Myers and James Ford Rhodes, businessman and historian. Contains comments and opinions on contemporary political issues and notable public figures (Theodore Roosevelt, Marcus A. Hanna, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson).

 Abstract:  Elisha Whittlesey (1783-1863) was a lawyer, United States Representative from Ohio (1822-1838), and public official. The collection consists of correspondence, legal papers, receipts, account ledgers, memoranda, drafts of legislation, and land deeds. The Elisha Whittlesey Papers deal with his career as a member of the United States Congress for sixteen years, comptroller of the United States Treasury for eight years, and Auditor of the Post Office Department for two years. His voluminous correspondence involves a large number of men prominent in national, late, and local affairs, particularly the Whig Party, American Colonization Society, the American Bible Society, and the development of the canals, rivers, harbors, railroads, and banks of northern Ohio and the Western Reserve. His mass of legal papers deals with the practice of his law office in Canfield, Ohio, his large holdings of land in the Western Reserve, Firelands, and the Maumee Valley. His wife and family occupy another prominent place in his correspondence, and he also had an interest in agricultural problems and served in the War of 1812.

 Abstract:  The 150th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry was composed of several former Ohio National Guard units and was organized at Cleveland, Ohio, on May 5, 1864, to serve 100 days. Its term of service was spent in garrison duty at Washington, D.C. It was mustered out on Aug. 23, 1864. After the war its veterans held annual reunions. The collection consists of company rosters, reports, speeches, and minutes of the annual reunions.
