 Abstract:  The Patrons of Husbandry, Shalersville Grange No. 1516 Minutes was the local grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, founded in 1867. Grange No. 1516 was organized in 1900, in Shalersville (Portage County), Ohio. Originally a secret organization open to both men and women, the Grange sponsored cooperatives for buying and selling goods, and nationally led the fight for fair railroad rates and practices. Less militant in Ohio than in the West, the Grange had become essentially a social organization by the 20th century. The collection consists of minutes of meetings which generally consisted of discussions of farming procedures and musical entertainment.

 Abstract:  Willeyville was an allotment in the southeast section of Ohio City, Ohio, purchased by John W. Willey (Cleveland's first mayor), James S. Clark and others for commercial development. The group also purchased land directly opposite this allotment in the Cleveland Flats area on the east side of the Cuyahoga River, and then built the Columbus Street bridge to connect the two sections of land. This thoroughfare diverted Cleveland-bound traffic that had previously traveled through the West Side Market of Ohio City directly to Cleveland via the new Willeyville area and Cleveland Centre, precipitating the Columbus Street "Bridge War" of 1836. The collection consists of a statement showing sale of lots in Willeyville, 1835-1836; certificates of tax sales, 1838-1844; and notices of tax delinquency, 1843-1846.

 Abstract:  Alcinus Ward Fenton (1839-1923) was a soldier in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, which was stationed in Virginia during most of the American Civil War. He later served as a customs broker, customs inspector, and chairman of the Board of Examiners of the Civil Service Customs House in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of Civil War letters written by Fenton while serving with the 6th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry; 2 scrapbooks of reunion records (ca. 1884) of the 6th Ohio Cavalry Veterans Association; and scrapbooks of letters and newspaper clippings relating to Fenton's career in customs administration, his relations with Charles F. Leach (customs collector and Republican political leader), political patronage, and Fenton's fitness for office.

 Abstract:  Christopher Cowan (1780-1835) was a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, industrialist who built the city's first rolling mill. He was the son-in-law of Major Abraham Kirkpatrick, Revolutionary War soldier and one of Pittsburgh's early pioneers. The collection consists of correspondence, agreements, powers of attorney, and other papers, concerning the estate of Abraham Kirkpatrick and the disposal of land in Ohio's Virginia Military District. Includes an unsigned letter to Col. John Neville, Woodville, Fort Pitt, Pennsylvania 1784, containing entries made while the writer traveled through the area of southern Ohio, with a sketch showing rivers, names of settlements, and Indian camps.

 Abstract:  Conference of ministers of churches in the Ohio and Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting of Free (Free Will) Baptists. The Institute was made up of ordained and licensed ministers and it approved the ordination and certification of ministers for service in churches of the yearly meeting. It was concerned for the social, educational, doctrinal, and spiritual interests of its members. The collection consists of minutes of yearly meetings of the Ministers Institute held in connection with the Ohio and Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting of Free Baptists. Meetings were held in various counties in Ohio and Pennsylvania at which sermons were preached and discussions concentrated on relations with other religious denominations and on the examination, certification, and licensing of ministers.
